Leston Paul is a Trinidadian musician, songwriter, arranger, and producer renowned for pioneering electronic music production in Trinidad during the early 1980s, blending synthesizers, drum machines, and traditional Caribbean elements into soca, calypso, and reggae genres. Paul began his career in the mid-1970s after learning piano at age 15 and joining the Ambassadors brass band on organ, where he honed skills in arranging and harmonizing. By 1980, he arranged calypsonian Mighty Duke's album Harps of Gold at Sharc Studios in Chaguanas, marking his entry into professional production, and soon collaborated with prominent Trinidadian artists, including Lord Kitchener, Machel Montano, Baron, and Merchant. His debut album, The Arrival (1983), showcased his innovative use of electronic instruments such as the Oberheim synthesizer and Roland drum machines, with vocals by artists like Charmaine Forde and Peter Britto. Paul's prolific output includes over 20,000 recordings as a producer and arranger, earning him a reputation as one of the most in-demand figures in the Caribbean music scene, particularly for soca and calypso hits that capture themes of Carnival celebrations, love, and everyday resilience. Notable works encompass albums like Keys to the City (1987) and The Arrival (1983), alongside tracks such as "All Nite Tonight" (co-written with Barbara Hernandez and featuring horn sections by Kool & the Gang), "Santa Cruz," "Evening Special," and "Everyday Life." Operating from his Mt. Lambert studio, he has continued producing rare electronic soca EPs like Let's Party Tonight (1980s tracks reissued in limited vinyl editions) and performed at international venues.
