00:00 - I. Concertino: Andante (to Allegro vivace) _____ Bassoon: Maurice Allard Conductor: Dimitry Chorafas Orchestra: ORTF Chamber Orchestra Year of Recording: ??? _____ "Marcel Bitsch (December 1921-September 2011) was a French composer and teacher who studied at the Paris Conservatory, later becoming Professor of Counterpoint there. The Concertino was written in 1948, and contains 3 distinct sections without pause. The first section is slow and lyrical, setting a heavy mood for the piece. After a series of high notes, the piece moves on to the second section, a virtuosic cadenza for the player which explores extreme dynamic contrast as well as irregular subdivisions of 5,6 and 7. This ends in a trill which leads into the final fast section, which is rhythmically complex, containing changing meters and rapid passages which occur over both scalic gestures and wide leaps. The bassoon and piano play equal roles in this movement, taking turns to carry the melody and provide accompaniment."
