This is the largest scale wildlife migration on Earth, occurring in the East African savannas, specifically in the Maasai Mara of Kenya and the Serengeti of Tanzania. Every year in July, the massive migration from the Serengeti in Tanzania slowly enters the Maasai Mara in Kenya, seeking new grazing lands and water sources. Approximately 2 million wild animals participate in this migration, including 1.5 million wildebeests, 500,000 gazelles, and 300,000 zebras. The migration usually begins by crossing the Sand River at the border of Kenya and Tanzania, where the animals graze while advancing northwards. Some groups of animals will proceed westward, crossing the Mara River, and enter the Mara Triangle area. Others will continue northward, crossing the Talek River, entering private conservancies in the northern part of Maasai Mara, including the Ol Kinyei Conservancy in the northeast, where they will join the migration herds from the Loita Plains. They will remain in these areas until October before heading back south to the Serengeti. The migration route can be influenced by factors such as climate change, habitat loss, environmental pollution, and overgrazing, affecting the amount of rainfall in different years and months.
