This is an update of our Turtle Habitat, the third in this series. Have added more natural potted plants replacing the plastic plants in the front corners. Potted plants work well in turtle tanks, live plants rooted on the bottom will tend to get uprooted. The basking area is now on the left side instead of in the center. There may be more changes in the future weeks. Sadly we released our three musk turtles. Musky, our alpha male of six years had become very aggressive and chased the females relentlessly and he intimidated Romeo, our smaller male mud turtle. I could not stand the idea of separating the turtles so I released all three into a large lake nearby. Musky was my favorite. We now have Muddy, our female 3-stripe mud turtle and Romeo, our male 3-stripe mud turtle, both wild caught. We have a new female mud turtle rescued from the road yesterday in the tank. I actually saw a car go over her but the wheels missed her. Close one! If she works out we will keep her. So far so good, she is eating and has taken over one of the acrylic logs in the shallow water platform and is an excellent swimmer. She is not featured in this video. We tried a different female mud turtle yesterday but Romeo was too aggressive with her, biting her. I put her back into our conservation area behind the house. I have been feeding and photographing her since 2006. I wish she could have worked out, she seemed happy in the tank - but did not like Romeo.
