Hudson River steamboat Thomas Powell part 5. Building the GIANT paddle wheels for my live steam scratch built RC model. Built in 1846, this walking beam paddle steamer had fixed paddles, just as did her successor, the very famous Mary Powell. Feathering paddles only appeared a few years later on the Hudson river. These "radial" paddle wheels were, thanks to their gigantic size, extremely efficient. On June 18, 1846, "Thomas Powell" ran from New York to Newburgh, 60 miles, in two hours and 40 minutes! That's 22.5mph! (35.5km/h or 19.5 knots!) The picture of the side wheeler "Mary Powell" you can see behind my finished wheel, is from a painting of my friend William G Muller, maritime historian and HRMM founder. Thanks, Bill! Plans I drew for this paddle wheeler and it's engine are not for sale. Thanks for watching!
