DAY 1 — Back in the Red — Sim Racing@ Wales: Afon Bidno - Severn My real-world days of motor racing and fast cars and bikes may be behind me… but the need for speed never leaves you. Sim racing has opened a new door where speed junkies can push the limits again — without the massive costs, wrecked cars, engines, or endless speeding tickets. So last night I set up my first sim rig, and before I even drove a single stage, the first thing I did was… EMF-proof it. Here’s something most sim racers don’t realise: Those direct-drive steering wheel systems used in many popular rigs produce very strong magnetic fields. Strong enough to send EMF meters straight into the red and beyond. ...the catch? That motor sits directly in front of you… right about the level of a man’s family jewels. ...not ideal. The good news is that sim rigs are actually much easier to fix than modern cars, which are bad enough. A few simple things make a huge difference: • Grounding the equipment • Using G-iron shielding around the direct-drive motor • Grounding all connected metal gear, like wheel & paddles. • Adding rubber isolation padding to paddles, stick & handbrake. The paddles themselves throw off very high electric fields, but grounding them almost eliminates them, bringing down the levels from 300V/m to 10V/m. Then G-iron Armoflex shielding placed between your man bits and DD zeros out the magnetic field problem. To measure all this properly, you need a meter capable of detecting both electric and magnetic fields — something like the MITO METER 2.0 [EURO], which I sell for helping people in creating healthier environments, and sim rigs.
