In 1912, Fairbanks-Morse developed their first oil engine... oil engines being an early ancestor to what would become the diesel engine. The earliest oil engines have very low compression ratios, so the combustion chambers needed a lot of external heat applied before the engine could start on heavy fuel oil (later to be known as diesel fuel). The Fairbanks-Morse oil engines evolved rapidly until the Y-V engines debuted in 1914. With a higher compression ratio than the earlier engines, the Y-Vs also evolved and eventually these medium-compression engines began to be known as "semi-diesels." This 1923 Y-V comes at the very end of Fairbanks-Morse's semi-diesel era. Just the next year, they would debut their first "true" diesel, the Y-VA. It is owned and operated by the Tri-State Gas Engine and Tractor Association in Portland, Indiana, and this engine can be seen at their annual summer show.
