Located in the county of Worcestershire, and around 15 miles north, and slightly west, of Worcester is the town of Bewdley. Geographically, Bewdley is situated along the River Severn, and on the fringe of the Wyre Forest national nature reserve. Its name is believed to derive from Old French 'beaulieu', meaning beautiful place. This came into use from around the late 13th century, possibly due to the presence of the Norman Mortimer family, who owned the manor here. By 1336, or possibly earlier, a ferry was in operation at Bewdley, providing a crucial crossing over the Severn. A market was officially granted to the town in 1376, and by 1448 a bridge was built over the river. These factors contributed towards Bewdley's growth during the medieval era. Its river trade dominance began to decline from around 1771 with the opening of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal, which bypassed Bewdley and instead served the neighbouring towns of Kidderminster and Stourport-on-Severn (the latter being its southern terminus). At the heart of the town is the Church of St Anne. This was built between 1745 and 1748, although the tower is older, having been built in 1695, possibly to prop up the chapel that was in place beforehand. This is one of around 300 listed buildings in Bewdley, making it one of Worcestershire's best-preserved towns, and a classic showcase of Georgian architecture. In 1862 a railway station opened in Bewdley. This formed part of a line between Hartlebury and Shrewsbury. The station closed to passengers in 1963, but in 1974 it was reopened as a heritage railway station, providing services as part of special events to this day. Regular public transport to the town consists of direct buses from Stourbridge, Kidderminster, Bridgnorth, Tenbury Wells, Ludlow, Worcester and various other nearby locations. Famous people from Bewdley include Stanley Baldwin (Prime Minister on three occasions during the 1920s and 1930s) and darts player Luke Woodhouse. 👇 SUBSCRIBE TO 4K EXPLORER FOR NEW VIDEOS EVERY WEEK 👇 https://www.youtube.com/4KExplorer?su...
