James Kalm has been covering the Bushwick art scene since publishing an article in the Brooklyn Rail mentioning it in 2003. Beginning in 2008, he started his YouTube coverage of the yearly celebration that’s come to be known as Bushwick Open Studios. Over this decade, your correspondent has visited the studios of dozens, maybe hundreds of local artists. Big and small, armatures or pros, painters, sculptors conceptualists, performers, musicians and tinkerers, viewers have been given a glimpse of what the habitat of down and dirty working artists in the trendy neighborhood of Bushwick Brooklyn looks like. This year, despite a lower profile and bad organization, your reporter ventures into four or five various studio complexes, and peeks in to see what some of the more interesting practitioners are coming up with.
