"Rumenatomy" is a surgical procedure involving the opening (incision) of the rumen, which is the largest of the four compartments of a ruminant's stomach (e.g., in cattle, sheep, goats). It is typically performed to remove foreign objects, relieve bloat, or access the rumen for diagnostic or therapeutic purposes. Causes / Indications for Rumenotomy: Rumenotomy is usually done in cases of: Hardware disease (traumatic reticuloperitonitis): Caused by ingestion of sharp foreign objects (like nails or wires) that settle in the reticulum and may puncture the stomach wall. Rumenotomy allows direct removal of the foreign object. Chronic ruminal tympany (bloat): When gas builds up in the rumen and can't be expelled. If not resolved by other means (like tubing or trocarization), surgery may be needed. Rumen impaction or indigestion: Due to ingestion of indigestible or poorly digestible materials (e.g., plastic bags, sand, hairballs, etc.). Rumenotomy helps remove the impacted material. Rumen acidosis or poisoning: When animals consume excessive fermentable carbohydrates, leading to low rumen pH and systemic illness. Surgery may help remove fermenting feed material. Exploratory purposes: For research, biopsy, or to diagnose conditions not easily identified otherwise. Access for transfaunation: In rare cases, to collect rumen fluid for transfer to another animal with digestive disturbance.
