Today we explore the Athabasca Glacier in Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada. The Athabasca Glacier is one of the six main 'toes' of the Columbia Icefield and is accessible from the Icefields Parkway. The Columbia Icefield is a surviving remnant of the thick ice mass that once covered most of Western Canada's mountains. Lying on a wide, elevated plateau, it is the largest icefield in the Canadian Rockies. Situated across from the Columbia Icefield Discovery Centre, its ice is in continuous motion, creeping forward at the rate of several centimetres per day. Flowing from the Columbia Icefield over three giant bedrock steps, the glacier flows down the valley like a frozen, slow-moving river. Because of a warming climate, the Athabasca Glacier has been receding for the last 125 years and losing half of its volume. The glacier is approximately 6 km long, and at its thickest is 300 m (980 ft). It has retreated more than 1.5 kilometres and has left a rocky landscape of moraines in its path. Unfortunately this and other glaciers from all around the world are melting at a high rate and slowly disappearing.
