First of all, what is a cataract? And if I get cataract surgery, will I still need glasses? Dr. Moos is back to explain how cataracts and cataract surgery affect your vision. Use the hashtag #AskAnEyeDoc to ask YOUR questions. So what is a cataract? A cataract is when the lens inside the eye grows--kind of like a tree trunk that keeps adding more and more layers. Eventually those layers in the middle get cloudy, so it starts to feel like you're looking through a dirty window. Cataract surgery is when a surgeon removes the "dirty" lens and puts a new, clear lens in. Most commonly, a lens that is best for distance vision will be put in, which may still require glasses for reading. Unfortunately, even surgery can't stop the eyes from aging. An annual trip to your eye doctor will be an important step in making sure your eyes are healthy and your vision remains top notch! If you have a question for the eye doctor, let us know! Make sure to use #AskAnEyeDoc in your post.
