When one of the biggest tech companies, infamous for their data collection, releases a VPN, I only have to ask: Why? It’s not a secret that Google is not privacy-friendly, so how can we trust a VPN by Google? Well, this is exactly the question I will tackle today. After reviewing a lot of VPNs, it’s time to figure it out: is Google VPN any good? ------------------------------------------------ ❓Can you trust Google VPN with your privacy? ------------------------------------------------ Now, when I say that Google is not privacy-friendly, it’s not just my opinion. Google has been accused of improper data handling for years at this point, so when they come out with a “privacy-friendly tool”, red flags go up in all directions. While most top VPN providers prefer privacy-friendly jurisdictions and US is not one of them. Still, I believe, this is not fair to just judge according to previous scandals or jurisdiction. ExpressVPN is pretty safe right now, and Surfshark’s jurisdiction is not a major concern either. ------------------------------------------------ 🔒What kind of encryption does Google VPN use? ------------------------------------------------ In a surprising act of confidentiality, Google VPN hides what kind of encryption it uses. If you didn’t know, encryption is the cornerstone of a VPN, without encryption, your data is completely exposed, and there’s no privacy or security in such a connection. That’s why most top providers use extremely complex encryption algorithms like AES-256 or ChaCha20 that can’t be cracked by brute force. Google VPN may do the same, however, it refuses to disclose that, which is very suspicious in my opinion. Such information should be transparent. ------------------------------------------------ 🛡️Was Google VPN audited? ------------------------------------------------ Now, I have to point out that Google VPN got an independent audit which is a big thing for a privacy tool. However, the results of this audit are not exactly flattering. After taking a closer look, I realized that there are security risks outlined in that audit, especially ones concerning Windows and Mac apps for Google VPN. On the contrary, top VPN providers like NordVPN or Surfshark have their audits confirming their privacy measures and claims of no-logs policies.
