— Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday made his first visit to Manipur since the outbreak of deadly ethnic clashes in May 2023, marking a significant political and emotional moment for the conflict-stricken northeastern state. Modi's visit came nearly two years after tensions between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities erupted into widespread violence that killed over 260 people and displaced more than 60,000. Since then, the state has remained under President’s Rule, following the resignation of Chief Minister N. Biren Singh earlier this year. The Prime Minister began his visit in the hill district of Churachandpur, a stronghold of the Kuki community, where he met families still living in relief camps. Addressing a public gathering at Peace Ground, he appealed for reconciliation and healing, stating, “Peace is the foundation of progress. Manipur's diversity is its strength, not a source of division.” He then traveled to Imphal, the state capital and a Meitei-majority area, where he addressed another rally at the historic Kangla Fort and inaugurated several completed infrastructure projects. Modi launched development initiatives worth over ₹8,500 crore, including road and highway upgrades, water supply systems, IT infrastructure, women's hostels, market complexes, and new school facilities. The bulk of these were concentrated in Churachandpur and Imphal, symbolizing the government’s intent to balance development between the hill and valley regions. The visit is seen as a bid to reassure citizens that the central government remains committed to both reconciliation and reconstruction. Security was tight throughout the day, with some civil society groups and underground outfits calling for shutdowns to protest the visit. While symbolic and ambitious in scope, the success of Modi’s outreach will ultimately depend on whether peace and trust can be rebuilt between deeply divided communities. #Desitdown #News #India’s #Modi #visits #Manipur #state #two years after #ethnic #clashes)
