AlteredNatives Alternative Music Therapy. Brigandage at The Fighting Cocks, Kingston playing 'Hide & Seek' on Saturday, February 21st, 2026. Michelle - Vocals Carl - Guitar Terry - Bass Alan - Drums History This UK post-punk band created a ‘buzz’ in the London area due to a front page article in the NME in 1983, by music writer/musician Richard North about the blossoming 'new' punk scene that he termed 'postive' punk but would soon morph into goth/emo. Based in Camden, London, vocalist Michelle and partner Richard North had been ‘faces’ at the beginning of punk in the mid-70s. The two also ran their own 'alternative fashion' stall, The Art Of Stealing, in Camden Market. Michelle was able to boast of being both the first in the queue for the 100 Club ‘Punk Festival’, and of being escorted to hospital in an ambulance by Mick Jones of the Clash. The original line-up of Brigandage featured Michelle (vocals), Mick Fox (guitar) and twin brothers Ben (drums) and Scott Addison (bass). However, the original band members left leaving Michelle with the band name. Searching for new members, friend Richard Cabut, the editor of Kick fanzine (he also wrote for Zig Zag as Richard Kick and the New Musical Express as Richard North), was the first to be drafted in on bass, with David Eaves on guitar and Tim Nuttall on drums. Brigandage Mark 1 had collapsed, ironically, following North’s infamous ‘Positive Punk’ piece in the NME in which he coined the phrase to seperate the 'new' darker punk sound (that would eventually morph into goth/emo) from that of the more traditional punk style. Unfortunately, the band proved unable to capitalize on their live reputation and split up. The Addison brothers later formed acid-jazz band Corduroy, while Michelle left the music scene in the late '80's. Brigandage is often associated with the early 80's UK punk scene and the short-lived' positive punk' movement. BRIGANDAGE REFORMED IN 2023.
