A German Jew who escaped Germany in 1934, it was around this time that Tal realized the dimensions of the tragedy, the brutal fate of many of his family members and friends, and the extent of destruction of his beloved home city, Berlin. Composed in the tradition of Hindemith and Schoenberg, who influenced Tal during his studies in Berlin, this music is a real post-romantic farewell to a world of German culture that ceased to exist. After Tal himself performed this work with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra in 1945, it was abandoned for many decades. In 2023, the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra performed it again with pianist Ofra Yitzhaki at the opening night of the Israel Music Fest.
