WHAT IS WORSHIP? | PART 1

What is Worship? Worship is more than just music—it is a lifestyle of reverence, devotion, and surrender to God. The word "worship" has deep roots in both Hebrew and Greek. In Hebrew, the primary word for worship is "shachah" (שָׁחָה), meaning "to bow down, prostrate oneself" in humility before God (Genesis 22:5). In Greek, "proskuneō" (προσκυνέω) is used, which means "to bow or kiss towards" in an act of submission and honor (John 4:24). Worship first appears in the Bible in Genesis 22:5, where Abraham tells his servants that he and Isaac will go up the mountain to "worship"—a demonstration of obedience and sacrifice, not music. Throughout Scripture, worship is expressed in various ways, including prayer (Psalm 95:6), obedience (Romans 12:1), service (Exodus 23:25), and even acts of giving (Proverbs 3:9). While music is a powerful form of worship (Psalm 150), true biblical worship is not confined to songs or instruments. Worship is about the heart posture before God, expressed through our actions, faith, and daily lives.
