Sequoya, a Cherokee silversmith, painter, and soldier, is best remembered for creating a written language for his people. Disturbed by the loss of Cherokee land and the lack of a way to preserve spoken words, he began working in 1809 to develop a system of writing. With his daughter’s help, he created 86 characters representing the syllables of the Cherokee language, drawing from English, Greek, and Hebrew letters. The new system proved simple and effective. Cherokee leaders adopted it, schools were established, and books and newspapers—most notably the Cherokee Phoenix in 1828—were published. This achievement helped unite and empower the Cherokee nation. In his later years, Sequoya studied other Native American languages and was celebrated for his contribution. He died in 1843, and his legacy is honored by the naming of California’s giant sequoia trees and Sequoia National Park. If you enjoy the featured books, please support the creators by purchasing.
