God Is Revealed In His Word 5 - God Is A Person (Genesis 1-2) 2/18/26 BI: God possesses and shares the qualities of personality with created humans. ‘Personality’ is the most identifiable attribute of God that is shared with His image-bearers. Yes, God is a person. But God is not a human. God is eternal. Humans have a beginning point. God is holy. People are sinful. God is omniscient, people are often wrong. , When we say that God is a “person,” we do not mean that He is a human being. We mean that God possesses “personality” and that He is a rational Being with self-awareness. So what is it that makes God ‘a person’? What makes the image-bearers—men and women which He made on Day 6—distinct from the similar animal kingdom that God called the earth to bring forth (v.1:24) on Day 5? Compare Genesis 1:20-25 and Genesis 1:26-31. We share much of our physical construction with other mammals. Similar breathing, similar blood flow, similar appendages like arms and legs. Similar muscular structures. Even similar instincts—like fight or flight. How then do we differ? In terms of humanity, a ‘person’ has these unique qualities: • A person has a mind, capable of reasoned intellect. • A person has a will, capable of complex determination. • A person has emotions, capable of expressing feelings. • A person has moral capacity, to measure out right and wrong. • A person has spiritual / soul level capacity to relate uniquely to God. 1. God has an intellect (Psalm 139:17; Isaiah 55:8–9; Luke 2:52; Romans 8:27). 2. God has emotions (Psalm 78:41; Psalm 78:40; John 11:35; Ephesians 4:30). 3. God has a will, or volition (1 Corinthians 1:1; 1 Peter 2:15; Luke 22:15; Galatians 5:17; Psalm 7:11). 4. God has moral awareness. (Genesis 2:16-17; 3:22; 4:6-8; 6:5-8; Exodus 20:1-17) 5. God has invisible, spiritual self-awareness. (Psalm 90:1-2; Exodus 3:14-15 ‘I am that I am’; All through the Bible, the personal pronouns He, Him, His are used of God. God said, “I am who I am. Say this to the people of Israel: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
