Balancing Regulation of Gene Expression in Cancer - Narrated by Debbie Irwin

The COMPASS and Polycomb families of chromatin modifiers normally have opposing roles in regulating gene expression. Mutations in these epigenetic factors are found to promote oncogenesis in cancers such as lymphomas. Mutational hotspots have been identified in the histone methyltransferase COMPASS which disrupts the balanced regulation of gene expression. Researchers at Shilatifard’s laboratory at Northwestern University’s Simpson Querrey Center for Epigenetics have discovered mechanisms to restore expression of tumor suppressor genes in several cancers, including bladder cancer, which are being evaluated in ongoing clinical trials.
