The A1 is the UK's longest road, running from London to Edinburgh, almost 400 miles in length, often known as the Great North Road. Most sections have been converted to motorway or dual carriageway, but there are still some lengths of single-carriageway in Scotland and the far north of England. From Baldock in Hertfordshire to Ferrybridge in Yorkshire, the A1 is a mixture of largely older 2-lane dual carriageway, mixed with a couple of sections upgraded to motorway. A fair bit of work has been done in the early-2000s in closing central reservation gaps and building a few new grade-separated junctions. Other improvements have taken place as part of the A14 construction. This video shows a southbound journey along the A1 in Bedfordshire, from the A428 junction at St Neots, to the "Black Cat" roundabout with the A421. A planned A428 improvement, due to open in 2027, will lead to major changes in this area.
