Making Our Jewel Box Kitchen

This video shows us making our "jewel box kitchen," a kitchen inspired by a turn-of-the-20th-century "jewel box bank" we'd seen in Grinnel, Iowa. The video starts with breaking ground to enlarge our historic house's old scullery and shows Gabriel digging holes below the frost line and making reinforced concrete pillars to support our new kitchen addition. Then he makes the flooring platform for the room, followed by the walls and ceiling. We put in wainscotting, Gabriel makes flash-glass windows (colored glass windows), and I paint the pressed-tin panelling which covers our walls and ceiling. For the floor we install marble tiles, with a slate "hearth" for our antique wood cookstove. Also, Gabriel installs a marble sink with a hand-pump for emergencies. Throughout the building and decorating process, we discuss the elements of Classical Greek and 19th-century Victorian history (among other things) which inspired us. The whole process took about three years, and is condensed here to under two hours.
