The Taliban are back. Twenty years after being chased out, the Islamic extremist movement is back in charge of Afghanistan. Many, perhaps most, Afghans are terrified. Why? Author Chris Woolf here, blogging about Afghanistan, and my book: "Bumbling Through the Hindu Kush: A Memoir of Fear & Kindness in Afghanistan", coming October 2021. Today’s question is: "Why are the Taliban so feared by Afghans?" The answer is rooted in the memory of their five years in power, prior to being ousted by a US-led coalition in 2001. The Taliban their severe interpretation of Islam on the population. Alleged thieves lost hands. Adulterers - mostly women - were publicly executed, along with alleged murderers. Women were banned from working and girls were denied any education. Teenage girls were forced to marry Taliban foot soldiers without consent. Music and photography were banned. Dissent and protest was punished by imprisonment without trial, torture, and death. Ethnic and and religious minorities were persecuted mercilessly. I've heard and read many personal stories of this oppression in my career. The current fear is also rooted in the Taliban's 20-year campaign of terror. Anyone associated with the government or the West, and their families, have been targeted for assassination - some as recently as the week that Kabul fell. Most Afghans fear the killing will not stop. The new Taliban government has so far said many of the right things, talking about a more tolerant and inclusive future. But we don't know if that pledge is sincere. On the streets, away from the cameras, low-level Taliban units have been reported to be carrying out sporadic home invasions, robberies, rapes; murdering and "disappearing" former government officials and soldiers. I was a broadcast journalist with the BBC World Service for 34 years. I worked in London, Afghanistan, southern Africa, but mostly in the US, where I became News Editor for public radio’s international news show, “The World.” I was on-air for many years as the “History Guy,” trying to explain complex global issues in accessible language. “Bumbling Through the Hindu Kush: A Memoir of Fear and Kindness in Afghanistan” is my first book. It’s the story of what happens when a regular person (me!) accidentally finds themselves lost in the middle of a war!
