4th test run, very interesting. I know ideally that if you want to be scientific you should only make one change at a time otherwise if you change more than one variable you and get a new result you can't be sure which change made the difference or the most difference, but it's January, freezing and i'm testing on my deck in the back garden and no doubt pissing off all the neighbours so i don't have the luxury of being able to do endless tests. the forecast was for rain from midday today and for the next few days so i tested several changes at once all of which i was sure would make a difference. Firstly i wanted to test the distributor that i have just rebuilt and modified for less centrifugal advance, thanks to the info' provided by Henrik Hø spacing the bob weights out from their start position about 5mm ought have reduced mechanical advance from 26º to around 20º and the reason i wanted to do that was so that i could run less degrees of ignition advance when at full advance while not having to compromise by losing degrees of initial advance as would have been necessary if i had just retarded an unmodified dizzy. the aim was 6-8º initial and 26-28º full advance, the motor certainly ran better today than in the 3 previous starts though i was having issues with the new timing light which wasn't adjusting as quickly as i would have liked between settings so i couldn't see for certain what full advance i have ended up with but it looked to be around the 20 degrees i hoped for on top of where ever i set the dizzy for initial. next big change was i decided to test the brand new never before run 2 into 1 exhaust system that i was going to sell on ebay as i already have one 2 into 1 system, but having seen and heard how it performed today i might not sell it after all, i knew it would make for better running at low revs and it certainly did. what surprised me though was that even though the only 'silencer i had to fit that 50mm secondary pipe was the very short renegade stainless straight through 'shorty' can, it was considerably quieter than the bigger bore 2 pipe system even though the 2 pipe system had 2 much longer straight through race cans. the smoke seen at the start of the video is just the paint on the primaries and copper grease burning off. lastly i bodged some fuel hose onto the top of the carbs with jubilee clips as i didn't have any proper 90º elbows and that means the weight of the cables was making them fall over out of the adjusters in the top of the carbs making a very tight angle for the inner cables and making balancing and adjustment of the cables and thus the carbs almost impossible. the couple of inches of fuel hose allowed the cables a much easier curve and kept them in place meaning the carbs could be balanced and stay balanced. all in all a very successful 4th run and i think the motor is probably now ready to go into a frame and have a bike built around it ready for some proper road and maybe even dyno testing and tuning. the important things is i now now the ignition and fueling and exhaust systems are all good enough for road testing as they are and the distributor modifications were successful. now i just need to build another bike :-) oh and sorry about the view of my arse, i hadn't considered that when placing the camera!
