Lake Tanganyika is a Central African lake which holds 17% of the worlds fresh water. It has evolved with a unique biodiversity and several unique Ciclid and Child fisheries species. Its natural habitats and especially artisanl fisheries are under threat from over fishing with the over exploitation of several key species which offer a key source of protein for millions of people in four the 4 riparian countries that border the lake - Tanzania, Zambia, Burundi and DR Gongo The Lake Tanganyika Authority has a key role in presenting fisheries catch data for fisheries decision making and management in the region.
