Buddhist learning center along with Nalanda Vikramashila University was established by King Dharmapala during the eighth century period in response to a supposed decline in the quality of scholarship at Nalanda. P. Sinha of Patna University (1960–69) and Archaeological Survey of India (1972–82). Atisha Dipankara (982–1054), the founder of Lamaism in Tibet - a renowned Buddhist scholar and  founder of the Sarma traditions of Tibetan Buddhism, is said to have been a student. Subjects like philosophy, grammar, metaphysics, Indian logic etc. were taught here, but the most important branch of learning was Buddhist tantra. The ASI conducted another excavation, unearthing a large square monastery with a cruciform stupa at its centre. The archaeological site is now spread across about 100 acres. There are 208 cells for monks around a courtyard having a stupa in the middle at the Vikramshila site,” Sinha noted. “Around 80 cells have been conserved and NTPC [National Thermal Power Corp] Kahalgaon has helped in it financially as part of the National Culture Fund. At this pace, complete conservation of the site would take 15–20 years.  Statues of Loknath, Mahakal, Tara and many Buddha figurines are found according to the Pala school of art. Some of them have been polished to perfection and glitter and made out of black basalt. Other gorgeous things on display include terracotta motifs, coins, household utensils, stone inscriptions, iron arrowheads, ornaments and daggers.
