Fridays with CVS - Lahars and post eruptive sedimentation impacting the marine environment examples

At coastal and island volcanoes, explosive eruptions can lead to extreme sediment transport into the marine environment, via lahars and other mechanisms. These post-eruptive processes can have major impacts on coastal environments and infrastructure and can extend the footprint of an eruption far into the marine realm. However, the factors controlling sediment remobilisation, transport and deposition are poorly constrained, and few examples of such processes have been studied in detail. Here, we present examples from recent eruptions in southern Chile, highlighting how these events have affected the marine environment and the opportunities an enhanced understanding of post-eruptive sedimentation may hold for reconstructing past volcanism.
