1. On July 27, 2025, in Palayamkottai, Tirunelveli district, 27‑year‑old Dalit software engineer Kavin Selva Ganesh was brutally hacked to death. The attack occurred while he visited his ailing grandfather at a Siddha centre where his girlfriend worked . 2. The alleged perpetrator is Surjith, the brother of Kavin’s girlfriend, who reportedly opposed their inter‑caste relationship . 3. Surjith initially fled the scene; he later surrendered and was arrested under the Goondas Act and booked for murder and SC/ST atrocity charges . 4. Both of Surjith’s parents, Saravanan and Krishnakumari, serving as Sub‑Inspectors in the Tamil Nadu Police, have been suspended. The father has now also been arrested; the mother remains absconding or under investigation . 5. The case was transferred to the Crime Branch–CID to ensure impartial investigation and avoid conflicts of interest . 6. Kavin’s family initially refused to accept his body until both parents of the accused were arrested. After five days of protest, the body was finally handed over on August 1; the deceased was cremated in his native village in Tuticorin district . 7. Public figures including political leaders and activists have condemned the killing, demanding swift justice and a dedicated law against honour/caste killings . 8.
