My first mission in IL-2 flying the Focke-Wulf 190 (Fw190A-8). The mission: medium altitude bomber intercept (B-26Bs), a task which suits this aircraft perfectly. The Fw190A-8 is heavily armed (4x 20mm cannons plus 2x 13mm machine guns), well armored, rugged (thanks to its radial, air-cooled engine) and has great engine performance at low to medium altitudes. If this was a high altitude bomber intercept of B-17/B-24s over Germany, our flight would need some Bf109s for top cover: the Fw190's engine performance drops off significantly above 20,000'. But today, we're in our element. On This Mission: The Fw190's armament proved itself DRAMATICALLY: I brought down 3x bombers in one pass. Debris from the 4th bomber got me, so the video also includes a belly up landing in a field. The other tactical debrief note: we did right by keeping our speed up and attacking the bombers without trying to engage the P-51B escorts, as our orders were specifically to engage the bombers. My wingman did a great job covering me, while having #3 and #4 split off was a good move to split the defenders.
