Getting a Japanese drivers license can be hard, even if you’re just transferring it over from your home country license. However the process is much much easier than what Japanese have to endure (and beginners learning in Japan). This is part 1 of 2 that hopefully answers some questions about getting a drivers license in Japan. (BROADCASTED LIVE) 1) current and past license and passport to prove you have at least 3 months driving experience in your home country. I had 4 licenses and 3 passports over 13 years to prove it! 2) eye test 3) written test (10 questions in your language of choice) If you’re Canadian, NZ, Australian, EU, you can get your license at those stage! Of your email American USA like me and not from Washington State and Maryland, younhave to take the PRACTICAL DRIVING EXAM. In Tokyo, you may have to wait as long as me - 4 weeks! So, if I fail tomorrow, I may have to wait another month to pass again. 4) the practical test on the course It’s not how well you drive - it’s how well you know the course! Know the rules of Japan, the laws, the ability to control the car on a small course. I knew I need d practice so I enrolled at the Musashi-Sakai Driving school for 4 hours of practice. I think 3 hours is enough of you’ve driven recently. I hadn’t 4 instructors during my practice sessions. I ach one had a different personality. The third instructor was the best. She explained what I needed to do for the “gaimen kirikae” and really cared about telling me pointers to not just pass the test but be a better driver. I asked the driving school instructors a lot of questions. Some didn’t know. One didn’t seem to care (she’s was tired) but in the end, I feel veteran prepared and that means feel safer in the car. In Japan, if you want to drive a manual transmission, you must take the manual transmission (stick shift) exam. You will be back to also drive automatic but automatic licenses can not drive manual. Driving without a license in Japan is a huge fine and jail time. I don’t recommend it. Police are very strict in Japan! INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS LIVENSE: If you’re a tourist or new to Japan, you can use an international drivers license for a year. This is great to practice with too! However if you’re a resident of Japan, you’ll eventually need a Japanese license. I strongly recommend you get it right away if you believe you will be here long term. Leave any questions below as a resource for others. Thanks and Good LUCK! SUPER CHATS! (Thank you) hellohi821 How about a beer after you pass all of the tests? Good luck! From Jim! (thank you Jim! I’ll need one for sure after this!!) RAMASIMHA bhaskar (thank you!)
