When the Third Reich fell in 1945, Europe's ruins concealed not just rubble, but an entire system of stolen wealth. Tons of gold, foreign currencies, and art masterpieces had been looted and secretly redistributed across the continent. Part of that loot never resurfaced: it remained buried in sealed tunnels, hidden in abandoned mines, or transported along clandestine routes that still generate theories today. One of the most persistent stories began in Poland, where the myth arose of an armored Nazi train filled with gold and treasures, lost in the tunnels of Silesia. In 2015, a team claimed to have detected the structure with ground-penetrating radar, triggering excavations and international coverage. However, investigations ruled out its existence. Nevertheless, the case turned the area into a tourist destination and kept the Riese Project enigma alive. In Spain, the border station of Canfranc served as a transit point for more than 86 tons of Swiss gold between 1940 and 1944. Documents recovered by a private citizen revealed that this gold, largely of looted origin, crossed to Madrid and Lisbon in exchange for tungsten and other resources vital to the German war machinery. More recently, in 2023, the Netherlands declassified a map indicating the location of a treasure buried in Ommeren during the Nazi retreat. After weeks of excavation, nothing was found. But the operation demonstrated once again that the trail of Nazi looting remains incompletely closed.
