If you live in suburban America, you are probably well familiar with the humming, buzzing, and somewhat concerning rattling sounds produced by the Grumman LLV postal delivery vehicle as it meanders by. You might even be familiar with the sound of the starter and flex plate teeth grinding each other to pieces as the Iron Duke engine under the hood is restarted for the hundredth time in a given day. Personally, I have a complicated relationship with these "Long Life Vehicles." On the one hand, I've been fixing the same stupid problems on them again and again for over half a decade now. Stop the ride please, because I'd like to get off. But on the other hand... they're actually pretty great. They're simple, reliable, and robust - and unlike any of the more modern vehicles USPS has tried to replace them with, in spite of their recurring issues, they just keep going and refuse to die. Today, we're looking at an example of the breed that - like the rest - has clearly seen some stuff. Because two out of the four cylinders in this particular 2.5 liter GM engine are no longer at the party, we get to swap it out for a fresh unit out of a Jasper box. Because this project is eating into my usual engine overhauling and video production time, I've decided to bring you along for the journey - and share some information and insights I've gathered about these funky aluminum mail carriers along the way. Let's dive in.
