The methods section of a research article or dissertations is like a recipe for others to follow or assess the value of your research. As someone who crossed over from Mathematics to qualitative research, I have read a range of articles across disciplines in an earnest effort to understand qualitative research methods and how they can lead to valuable knowledge. I found 5 main things that great methodology sections of qualitative studies address. This led to a template I adopt for all my papers and this has brought efficiency to my process and clarity and transparency for my readers. In this video, I present the structure, contents, and rationale for a great methods section for a qualitative case study article/ thesis. Specifically, a great methods section succinctly and transparently presents the following: Research design and justification Research setting and relevance Case selection and rationale Data collection, types, and details Analysis approach. This is a structure that I adopt for all my qualitative research papers with some variation depending on the nature of the study and target journal. If you use this structure, it helps you to condense the details and avoid repetition. It also helps readers to receive crucial information in the right order and in a more digestible format.
