At Lenox Hill Neurosurgery we are experts in the management of arteriovenous malformations or AVMs of the spine and spinal cord. They are abnormal connections between arteries and veins that should not exist. Some are congenital and some are acquired. Spinal AVMs can present with back pain, weakness in the legs and arms, as well as urinary incontinence or bowel involvement. An MRI is the diagnostic test of choice to determine if there’s an AVM that can cause bleeding and/or edema or swelling of the spinal cord. If there’s suggestion of an AVM on the MRI then a spinal angiogram should be performed. Embolization or closing of connections between arteries and veins by injecting medical crazy glue inside the vessels can be performed at that time using neurophysiologic monitoring. This could be the definitive treatment or can be followed by surgical resection. The interdisciplinary team at Lenox Hill Hospital composed of microvascular neurosurgeons, neuro-endovascular surgeons, neurologists and neuro-radiologists are involved in the decision making. Your safety is our goal. Thank you for choosing Lenox Hill Neurosurgery.
