Starting near Sharpness Docks and meandering past fields and riverbank, this walk keeps the Severn always close—glinting, shifting, and moody as ever. Then, just past the canal’s edge, lies something truly strange: the Purton Hulks, where ships went to die, and somehow stayed to tell their tales. 🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore The Purton Ship Graveyard looks like a rusting, rotting afterthought—but it’s actually a deliberate act of preservation. In the early 1900s, the River Severn was gnawing away at the narrow strip of land separating it from the canal. To stop a breach, old vessels—barges, schooners, concrete lighters—were deliberately run aground here, sacrificed as a bulwark against erosion. They’ve been slowly decaying ever since, becoming a bizarre open-air museum where the boundary between nature and industry blurs. Over 80 hulks now rest here, dating from the late 1800s to the mid-20th century. Some are skeletal; others are half-submerged, their hulls tangled in brambles and wildflowers. Look closer and you’ll spot iron rivets, cracked wooden ribs, and the last lonely curve of a bow—all becoming part of the landscape, like shipwrecks swallowed by time. The canal itself was once a marvel—built to bypass the treacherous bends and sandbanks of the River Severn. When it opened in 1827, it was the broadest and deepest canal in the world, a freight superhighway that let coal, timber, and grain flow from Gloucester to the Bristol Channel. Today, it’s a place for dog walkers, cyclists, and slow days. This is a walk through quiet water and quiet ruin—equal parts beauty and melancholy. Perfect for those who like their history half-buried and their paths unhurried. 📍 Walk Starting Point (What3Words): ///freezing.shield.confetti 🗺️ Full Map of All Walks, Drives, and My Ever-Growing To-Do List: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edi... 📽️ Walk Stats • Walk #270 • Time: 1:00pm – 20th April 2025, English Spring • Difficulty: ⭐ 1 / 5 • Beauty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 / 5 • Steps: 8,023 • Distance: 3.38 Miles / 6.17 km • Weather: Bit windy!
