Here’s the description for Torna. I discovered a little more of the history and included it here. If you want, I can put it up now. Let me know. Torna a Surriento (Come Back to Sorrento) This charming and very popular Neapolitan song was composed in 1894 by the Italian musician Ernesto De Curtis with lyrics by his brother Giambattista De Curtis. It speaks of the coastal town Sorrento, Italy. The song paints a lovely picture of Sorrento describing its lush scenic beauty as well as a longing and nostalgic feeling for the homeland. A legendary history of the song has a bit of a political tone. It was said that the Mayor of Sorrento asked the DeCurtis brothers to make a musical plea to the Italian Prime Minister, Giuseppe Zanardelli to be reminded of the great beauty of Sorrento and, practically, make good on a promise to construct a new sewage system for the town. The lyrics are written in the Neapolitan language as opposed to standard Italian and is well suited to poetically describe the beauty of Sorrento. Tony Sandler’s performance in Italian along with the quartet’s presentation with English lyrics conveys the message of love, admiration and longing in a way that warms the hearts of the listeners. Tony’s powerful delivery wonderfully captures the sentimental mood of the music and its role as an enduring symbol of Italian culture.
