Produced from 2024 to 2026, 'Timescapes' is a love-letter to the Castle Point Borough area in South Essex, where Liam and Joe of Beyond the Point grew up and first discovered their interest in heritage. It has been several years in the making, inspired by documentary film makers of the 20th century, who used visual media to provide an honest depiction of a local area for the sake of posterity, capturing a slice of it's buildings, landscapes and culture - a genre which seldom happens even in a world of abundant media and online video. As the project grew, the aim became one to not only immerse the viewer in walking trails through the overlooked corners of their surroundings, but to create a document which recorded almost every building of historical interest in the borough. It is as much a film about the present as it is the past, showing us how the area today came to be. The film developed from a concept for virtual walking trails proposed when the Estuary Festival and Metal Culture approached Liam Heatherson in early 2024, looking to find ways to engage the local community with its history, and get them thinking about how the landscape might change into the future in light of the Local Plan. In early 2025, the This Is Us project ran and involved events for local residents and Scout groups to learn about history through creative processes. The film was largely written, filmed and edited by Liam over the next year, bringing together the material and knowledge of the Canvey Island, Benfleet, and Hadleigh & Thundersley Community Archives whom have been an enormous help. The film was then fine-tuned, with suggestions, corrections, and additional material added throughout 2025. After hundreds of hours of work, we are delighted to finally release the completed film in 2026. BeyondthePoint.co.uk
