Hot Water Beach and Cathedral Cove, Coromandel, New Zealand, Day 8 of our Grand Tour, Nov/Dec 2024

Day 8 of our Grand Tour of New Zealand and Sydney, November/December 2024, and starting from our base of Tairua, we experienced 2 of New Zealand's most famous visitor sites, Hot Water Beach and then Cathedral Cove - both were absolutely outstanding. Firstly, on our drive to Hot Water Beach, we made a scenic stop at the Whenuakite Kiwi Zone Viewpoint. Although no Kiwis were spotted it did give us incredible views of the Pacific Ocean. On arriving at Hot Water Beach, our first task was to obtain shovels to did out our beach thermal pools - $10 each in a local shop - then it was onto the beach to start digging. We were there early but the crowds soon followed! We tried a few spots before settling on our final location but it was amazing to dig down a few inches and discover boiling hot sand and water - some parts were too hot but sea water helped to cool it. Hundreds of people were doing what we did and were having a great time. We got there at low tide and that gave us a window of 2 hours to dig - check times before going. Next, we drove the short distance to Hahei beach - our research had discovered the walking paths to Cathedral Cove were still under repair and closed so to access the cove we had to get a boat from Hahei beach - what a boat it was, part boat, part car!! 5 mins, $80 each, took us to the cove which was spectacular - 46th beach in the world's top 50 beaches in 2024 and it's no wonder - truly spectacular. Hard to get the right photo as people get in the way, but Andrea was very patient and got great shots - brilliant spot. After that it was lunch and a bit of exploring further along the coast visiting Cooks Beach, Shakespeare Lookout Point and Whitianga Beach. A brilliant day!
