Discover Talisay City: Public Market, Church & Plaza | Negros Occidental, Philippines.

Discover Talisay City: Public Market, Church & Plaza | Negros Occidental, Philippines. This video was recorded last January 10, 2025 at around 10:00 AM. Hi Guys! Today, we’re taking a look at the Talisay City Public Market in Negros Occidental, a lively spot known for fresh produce, meats, seafood, and a wide range of dry goods. Open daily from 4:00 AM to 7:30 PM, the market becomes especially vibrant on Fridays, offering an impressive selection of farm-fresh items and dried fish. On the first Friday and Sunday of each month, the market hosts special "Market Days," where you can find an even greater variety of goods. It's a perfect opportunity to experience traditional Filipino shopping while enjoying local snacks and delicacies. Known for its affordable prices and diversity, the market draws large crowds, so visitors should plan for limited parking and crowded aisles. Some areas, particularly the fish section, may have wet floors, so be sure to wear appropriate footwear. The Talisay City Public Market has long been a vital part of the community, supporting the local economy by providing farmers, fishermen, and small-scale vendors with a place to sell their goods. However, a new chapter is on the horizon. Currently, the city is constructing a New Public Market and Terminal Complex at Hacienda Sia in Barangay Zone 12A. The relocation is expected to take place this year, 2025, marking an exciting development for the city. Also in Talisay is the San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish Church, a cornerstone of the city’s cultural and historical heritage. Founded on January 1, 1850, by the Augustinian Recollects, the church was named after San Nicolas de Tolentino and signaled the official establishment of Talisay as a town. Father Fernando Cuenca, the parish's first priest, played a significant role in the town's growth. Alongside fostering spiritual guidance, he introduced sugarcane farming, which became the foundation of Negros Occidental’s booming sugar industry. The current church structure, built between 1933 and 1936, is an architectural gem featuring twin towers, cupolas, and a portico. Its interior boasts a mahogany altar adorned with gilded carvings, housing the patron saint San Nicolas de Tolentino, along with statues of San Ezekiel Moreno, San Rafael, and Christ. Adjacent to the church is the Talisay City Public Plaza, a vibrant space for community events and gatherings. Recently restored, the plaza retains its colonial-era charm while being modernized for tourism and commercial use. Other restoration projects include landmarks such as the Old Public Market, Manukan building, and Old City Hall, creating a blend of historical architecture and contemporary functionality. The plaza also serves as a venue for cultural celebrations. During the holiday season, it transforms into a spectacular display of lights and decorations, showcasing the city’s commitment to honoring its heritage. These iconic landmarks—the San Nicolas de Tolentino Parish Church, the Talisay City Public Plaza, and the soon-to-be-completed New Public Market—reflect Talisay’s rich history and dedication to cultural preservation while embracing growth and modernization.
