Kidney Companions | Increasing access to kidney transplants in Northern Michigan

Dr. John Stanifer and Molly Stanifer noticed a lack of support for kidney patients in Traverse City and Northern Michigan, making it difficult and often impossible for residents to receive kidney transplants downstate. In an effort to improve chances for transplant hopefuls, they developed Kidney Companions, a nonprofit organization based in Traverse City. This volunteer program provides the required support for kidney patients to be eligible for a transplant. For their innovation, creativity and passion, Dr. John Stanifer and Molly Stanifer received Gift of Life's Innovation Champion Award in 2024.
