In my first Indiana episode, I visit the site which is believed to be the spot where George Rogers Clark captured Fort Sackville, which, during the American Revolution, was occupied by British forces. Clark would claim it for the United States in 1778, but it took a battle in February 1779 to help gain a stronghold for Clark and his army to capture British forces. Vincennes locals wanted to preserve the site, which wasn't marked by anything except a marker by the Daughters of the American Revolution. It wasn't until the 1920s that plans began for the monument, getting Congress involved. Work began in 1931 for the site. It was designated as a National Park in 1966, with then-President Lyndon B. Johnson speaking at the steps outside the monument. National Register of Historic Places (#66000007) (10/15/1966)
