Competition law is an important part of every healthy economy. Competition law regulation encourages and maintains competition. Competition law is regulated by the Competition Act which ensures that there is a level playing field where large and small businesses can compete fairly and effectively, with the knock-on effect of driving down prices and providing consumers with more choice. The Competition Amendment Act seeks to promote the effective entry into, participation in and expansion within various markets by small and medium businesses or firms controlled by historically disadvantaged persons. The main objective of the amendments is to address two persistent structural constraints on the South African economy, being the high levels of economic concentration and the skewed ownership profile of the economy.
