During pregnancy, the cervix plays a critical role in keeping the baby safely in the uterus until it is time for birth. Normally, the cervix stays long and firm through most of the pregnancy, only softening and shortening in preparation for labour. When the cervix is shorter than expected—often detected through an ultrasound scan—this can be a warning sign. A short cervix provides less of a physical barrier to the growing baby, and as a result, it significantly increases the risk of preterm labour and premature birth. The shorter length means the cervix may begin to open too early under the pressure of the pregnancy, sometimes without pain or contractions at first. Babies born too soon face higher chances of health complications, making this an important factor for doctors to monitor. The good news is that identifying a short cervix allows for preventative care. Treatments such as progesterone, cervical cerclage (a stitch to reinforce the cervix), or the use of a pessary can reduce the risk of preterm birth and improve outcomes for both mother and baby. #cervix #pregnancy #mothers
