Man herding donkeys STORYLINE: Election organisers in Afghanistan have been transporting ballot boxes and papers to the tens of thousands of polling stations around the country to prepare for the first ever direct elections on Saturday. With no or bad roads in many areas, election organisers have had to rely on the use of donkeys as the best means of transport. United Nation's election workers drive up the bumpy roads of the mountainous northern Badakhshan province into Arghanchukha village, 320 kilometres (200 miles) northeast of Kabul. However, many villages are a two--week walk from the nearest road. The jeeps stop at the entrance of Som Darreh, Tail Valley and unload the cargo of ballot boxes ready for Saturday's vote. From here, the ballot papers and boxes are transported by donkey. To reach the villagers of Som Darreh, 10km from the road, the donkeys have to carry 4 plastic ballot boxes and a few hundred voting papers. More remote areas receive their ballot boxes by special helicopter delivery. Saturday's elections will be conducted under tight security due to the threat of Taliban attacks.
