There is a desperate need for a return to God-centered preaching in our churches. The Bible is God’s story from start to finish. It is all about Him not about me. “People are starving for the greatness of God,” John Piper writes. They just don’t know it. Piper goes on to talk about a sermon he preached from Isaiah 6 on the holiness and greatness of God. Would a sermon on the greatness of God meet the needs of his people? Some would say that he should seek to meet the needs of the broken by getting practical about the struggles of life. Weeks later a man took him aside after church to tell him that he and his wife had been going through the hardest times of their lives. Not long before Piper preached that sermon, the couple had discovered that their child had been sexually abused by a close relative and they were shattered by the knowledge. He said to John Piper. “Do you know what has gotten me through? The vision of the greatness of God’s holiness that you gave to me the first week of January. It has been the rock we could stand on.” Join David Christensen as he unpacks this concept of preaching as worship in this training video. If you want to explore the concept in more depth, we recommend reading John Piper’s book, Expository Exultation: Christian Preaching as Worship. David Christensen, is the president and chief executive officer of The Rephidim Project. David retired in 2018 after 28 years as the preaching pastor at Galilee Baptist Church in Gorham, Maine, to devote himself to encouraging pastors, missionaries, and church leaders through Bible exposition and teaching the methods of expository preaching to the next generation of preachers. He also served at New England Bible College as a professor, Academic Dean, and Interim President, where he taught Homiletics, Bible, and Pastoral Theology. David is the author of 6 books and has taught seminars on preaching in Ireland, Russia, Ukraine, Panama, and Maine. He spent his childhood years in Pakistan, the son of missionary parents but moved to Maine as a teenager, where he met his wife, Janie. After their seminary years in Indiana, God led them back to northern New England in 1984, where David has served in the dual ministries of pastor and teacher for 30 years. They live in Maine and have two adult daughters. Our Mission: to mobilize, equip and encourage pastors worldwide with a blueprint for expositional preaching that produces Christlike believers by the power of the Holy Spirit to the glory of God. Our Vision: to develop a team of experienced expositors to equip pastors globally through workshops, cohorts and online resources while partnering with other like-minded organizations to stimulate a movement of the church back to the expositional preaching of God’s Word.
