Paint Midwest Winter Barns in Acrylic: Snow Color, Warm & Cool Whites, Easy Focal Point - Premiere Acrylic Tutorial with Ginger Cook Get your brushes ready! Join the "Gold Standard" of acrylic painting, Ginger Cook, for a fun, step-by-step live painting lesson. 🎨 ABOUT THIS LESSON: In this live broadcast, we will be tackling a beautiful new subject in acrylics. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced artist, you will learn techniques for color mixing, brushwork, and composition. Key teaching points Using a limited palette (legacy palette) to keep color mixing simple but rich: titanium white, zinc white, burnt umber, raw umber, burnt sienna, phthalo blue (green shade), ultramarine blue (red shade), cadmium yellow medium, and yellow ochre/yellow oxide. I will explain warm vs. cool whites: warming white with tiny touches of yellow oxide/raw umber for sunlit snow and roofs, and cooling white with blues for shadowed snow and distant areas. Showing that snow is not just “white”: its color shifts between blue, violet, gray, and warm off‑white depending on light direction, time of day, and nearby objects. Using a grayscale/black‑and‑white reference to study values before painting, so you understand where the lightest lights, mid‑tones, and darkest darks go to support the focal point. Designing a clear focal point: making the main barn the center of interest through the lightest values on its roof and front, warmer whites, and stronger contrast against the background trees and sky. Building depth: starting with the sky and distant tree line, then working forward to barns, trees, fences, and foreground snow, softening and lightening shapes as they recede. Brush techniques: “smudgy” dry‑brush for sky and background trees, angle brush work for roofs, doors, and snow, and liner/detail brushes and Posca pens for fine branches, birds, and icicles. Painting believable evergreens and bare trees: tree trunks that widen at the base, Y‑shaped branching, branches overlapping the trunk rather than sticking out like a comb, and snow resting on selected branches. Creating snow banks and paths: layering shadow colors first, then dry‑brushing lighter and warm whites on top to carve out mounds, drifts, and a soft S‑curve path leading into the scene. Correcting and refining: showing how to “erase” with clean water on a stiff brush, then re‑paint; re‑checking and adjusting values, angles of roofs, and fence direction near the end, instead of quitting too early. Scaling up compositions: brief bonus discussion on using smaller studies and traceables to plan and then enlarge paintings while keeping the value structure and focal point strong. With these points together, you will not just learn how to copy this winter scene, but how to think about values, light, and snow color so they can design their own barn landscapes. 🗓️ WHEN WE GO LIVE: We broadcast live on YouTube!
