REMEMBERING JIM VALVANO AND THE CARDIAC PACK OF 1983

Last week I visited the grave of Longtime North Carolina State Women's Basketball Coach Kay Yow. This week I am in Raleigh North Carolina and will be playing my respects to another Wolfpack Legend, Jim Valvano. Jim lead the North Carolina State Wolfpack to the 1983 NCAA Men's Basketball National Championship. The Cardiac Pack as they were called "survived and advanced" through a number of Close Games in both the ACC and NCAA Tournaments defeating the Top Ranked Houston Cougars 54-52 in the National Championship Game at the Pit in Albuquerque, New Mexico. After leaving NC State in 1990 Jim embarked on another career as a broadcaster with ESPN who paired him with another flamboyant Italian name Dick Vitale. In June of 1992, Jim was diagnosed with Cancer. Less than a year later on March 4, 1993, Jim Valvano gave his most memorable speech at the EPSY Awards in New York. The speech was so emotional and so moving that it is still played today as part of College Basketball's Jimmy V week, to raise money for The V Foundation for Cancer Research. Less than two months later on April 28, 1993, Jim Valvano passed away from cancer.
