He made his mark as a cutting edge producer/DJ at the infamous 'Anokha' club nights where along side Talvin Singh, he was one of the key DJs instrumental in the success and aesthetic of the highly acclaimed club night. His eruptive tracks 'Flight IC408' and 'Chittagong Chill', featured on Talvin Singh's Anokha compilation have claimed their place in history and remain anthems. Aside from his own work, SOB has either worked, played, remixed or toured with numerous world class artists, including Bjork, The Clash, Ronnie Jordan, Massive Attack and the late Ananda Shankar. It was at Anokha that Bjork discovered State Of Bengal's and pursued him to sign up to her Record label One Little Indian, (on which his debut album Visual Audio was released) and tour on her 'Homogenic' album world wide tour in 2001. Following his debut album 'VISUAL AUDIO' Sam fulfilled a long time dream in 1998—his mission to re-introduce the pioneer of '60s Indo-funk, the classical sitarist Ananda Shankar . Shankar spent a long career at the forefront of fusion and experimentation that pushed the boundaries with his astonishing covers of Light My Fire and Jumping Jack Flash. Some of the past magic came to life in a collaboration album with Ananda Shankar titled 'WALKING ON'. This was followed by a highly successful UK tour. Sam's next album 'TANA TANI', in collaboration with nomadic Baul Singer Paban Das Baul was another life long ambition. Released in 2004 it has been described as "a folk culture over 500 years old meeting the digital soundscapes of the 21st century." Song Lines magazine nominated it as best global album of the year and it was voted no.2 on XLR8R Global Break Beat charts 2004. Dubbed as the God Father of Asian Fused Break Beat, Sam remained close to his roots and community. His music process was inclusive, reaching out to many. It was not just about him; it was as much about those around him. State of Bengal influenced a wide range of people, mentored many rappers, musicians, Dj's including his brother Deedar, former rapper of Asian Dub Foundation & Mustaq from Fun-Da-Mental. His sound inspired several others, and his generosity with his knowledge helped to open the doors. True to his background, Sam was committed to using music as a tool for education and he continued to work conduct music workshops, both in the UK & globally. By the end of workshops for Puma flagship store in India 2013, the participants had nicknamed him 'The Monk'. State Of Bengal's unique style & signature travelled to clubs and festivals around the globe both in his DJ avatar and with the SOB live band. He was also instrumental in successfully introducing the 'British Asian Underground' scene into Mumbai in 1998, (playing with drummer INNA.MOST aka Marque Gilomore & Amar in a series of events organised by Sweety Kapoor). There too, he helped create a platform for aspiring DJs and producers. His 4th Album was titled 'SKIP-IJ'—it revealed another side of State of Bengal. With its unusual play ground rhythms, its off rhythms and street styles, the album featured several female vocalists. At the time of his passing Sam was set to release his new album 'SAGE FREQUENCY'. His 5th album. The title is inspired from the name of his young son Sage. Sam's loss is felt deeply & widely.
