Sint. Maarten was the 8th and final port of call on our Southern Caribbean cruise aboard Carnival Glory before our return to Miami. The island is split into two territories under Dutch and French sovereinty. Our ship docked in Phillipsburg which is the captital of the Dutch part of the island. It was a national holiday on the day of our arrival so transport was difficult and alot of shops in town had closed early, so we went to Maho Beach to see low flying planes land at Princess Juliana Internation Airport - a bucket list item for myself. The airport is made famous due to the fact that its runway perimeter is right by the beach and tourists (myself included) have been known to hold onto the airport fence when aircraft are taking off- it was a bucket list item for me! Its worth checking flight arrival times though as we did not see any big jets i.e Boeing 747 operated by KLM as this service does not fly to the island every day. Most of the arrivals and departures on the day we were there were small inter-island planes- a mixture of turbo props and older jets. The international arrivals - the larger jets arrived during the early afternoon with a Delta and American Airlines Boeing 757. We also saw an Arke Fly Boeing 787 dreamliner, and the largest jet was an arrival from Paris - An Airbus A340-300. Its worth a look, but the beach is much smaller than older videos would indicate as quite alot of it has been lost to coastal erosion. Likewise if you do go for a swim the water gets deep quickly, so not really very good for small children. There are a few bars in the area, which are popular, but not great quality for cocktails and are quite expensive due to the captive audience of tourists and plane spotters. It was all good fun!
