Drill Tap Steel Bar 070819 This video shows you what it's like to see this steel bar that's welded onto a simple hand cart, as it is being drilled out with a #7 number 7 seven drill bit so that it can be tapped out with a 1/4-20 quarter-twenty hole tap. There are many important steps that must be observed during this process, and it's important that you take your time and don't try to rush a job like this. if you try and drill too fast, the drill bit and the metal will heat up so far and so fast that you can damage the drill bit and make it very hard to drill into the steel metal. First it's a good idea to use a center punch to mark the spot where you want to drill. Next it's important to use a center drill bit to start the drilling process. Center drills are very hard drill bits that are designed to start holes in hard metals so that the holes are drilled straight and that they are drilled where you want them to be drilled at. Regular drill bits are actually very delicate and they can "walk" while you drill. So they are not very good to use for "starting" a hole in many materials. Then, after the hole is started with the center drill, then you can go ahead and drill the main hole with the correct size drill bit. Again, it's very very important at this step to use the correct size drill bit. If it's too small, the tap won't be able to thread the hole, and of course if it's too big, then the tap won't be able to make the correct size threads and the bolt or screw that you try and use will not be able to "bite" into the threads since they won't be the correct size. When tapping the hole, it's important that the hole is clean and free of metal chips, and that you use plenty of oil to lubricate the threads as you tap. If you feel any sort of binding taking place with the tap, stop immediately and try to back out the tap. Otherwise you could end up braking off a thread in the hole, or worse, braking the tap off inside the hole and perhaps completely ruining the job you're trying to do. If all that goes well, one final step is to clean out the top edge of the hole by using a large center drill's cutting edge to put a nice angle on the leading edge of the screw hole to make it easier to start your bolt and also, so that it looks nice and feels nice to the touch. Otherwise it could be a little bit sharp and many people don't like that. So anyway, I hope that you like this video and that you can learn something from it about the proper way to drill and tap a hole into a hard metal like a steel bar. It's a little tricky to do, but definitely fun and very cool! Plus it's awesome! Extra description added 1/1/2021: Best video, this is a really great video for learning how to do drill and tap a hole into a steel bar, many people will like this video, it shows you the entire job, from start to finish, but doesn't waste a lot of time, this video gets right to the point, has only a very little bit of comments, commentary, there is no delay, and many people like this kind of video, because it tells you exactly what you need to know, and nothing that you don't.
